Google’s 2 Step Verification

What exactly is 2 step verification?

Google’s 2 step verification is its new security feature to protect you data such as gmail from any unauthorised access. It provides and extra security layer with the normal username and password layer. As the name says if you have enabled 2 step verification, there are 2 steps of authentication before giving you access to the account. One is normal username and password and other is your phone/mobile.

Why to use it?

It provides a very good and hard to break security layer to you data because it involves your mobile phone. You should use it for your email if you cannot afford it being compromised and all the data lost.

How it works?

After enabling 2 step verification whenever you will login to you account using your username and password you will be asked a verification code which is send to your phone by the means of SMS, Voice Call or others (Android/Iphone App).

Here is how it looks like, You fist login as normal.

After that it will ask you for a verification code that is sent to you using a predefined means. In my case a phone a call. Verification code is different everytime.

You can also check the box to remember you for 30 days. After this everything else works just normal.

How to get started?

To enable 2 step verification you need to go to 2 Step Verification Setup Page

You will then be asked to login to you google account and you will see a button like the one below.

Click on start setup to get started.

After filling everything click on next button, click on next button again to add a backup option in case your phone is not reachable.

There will be shown some backup verification codes save those codes as text file or print time so that you can use those in case your phone is not reachable. Click next after saving those codes. It will then ask for another backup phone number, enter it and click on next. click on next button again and there will be a button to Turn on 2-Step Verification click that to enable it.

A popup will come up saying you will be logged out from all devices, click ok. Hurray you have now successfully enable 2-Step verification. From now on whenever you login to you account a verification code will be send to you mobile phone.

This article really explained a lot. Don’t get me wrong, I love Google services but sometimes they don’t think through the interfaces enough, they just go straight to minimal in every way. Thanks.
